The nature of Canon in the Twitterverse

Grand Master @Luke__Skywalker posted the following rant:

As a roleplayer of over 5 years I am disappointed at the people who break canon rules and make theyre canon characters do uncanon things much like dating characters that never existed in the canon realm, forcing people to join your world and ect. If you people want to be a canon character you must abide by that character’s personality, background, ect. This concludes my rant. Thank you and for all those toes I stepped on…get some ice for those toes and heed my advice! Thank you.

He further went on to clarify the following:

Don’t get me wrong. I am not knocking non-canon characters. They show imagination and I respect that. My beef is with canon characters that do grossly uncanon things.

Now as I understand it, he is referring to people doing things that their character from the books, comics and video games does not partake in something that their character would not do normally. The writer today being @CadeSkywalker is quite fortunate in this scenario. Cade flirts with every attractive woman he sees. He deeply loves @Deliah_Blue but still has an emotional bond with @AzlynRae and @TheDarthTalon built upon saving their lives when they were dying or already dead. He is a bad pilot, a drunk and a somewhat reformed drug addict, hooked on Deathsticks.

The freedom Cade has, both as one of the last Skywalkers alive (Nat lives too), and as one of huge influence to both restore the Jedi Order, remove the Sith, learn and teach others means that as Cade Skywalker, with an unwritten future, I am pretty free.

In contrast, someone like Luke is reasonably limited. Luke is a very loveable character - both his writer and the canon person. The difficulty is, on Twitter we like to be social. We like to flirt, we like to hug, we like to tell people they smell great and we love to be told the same. We like to show off arrogant statements ironically…

Luke Skywalker, unfortunately, can only do a few of those. For one, he would not be caught flirting with any woman other than @TheMaraJade as made clear in Dark Nests by Troy Denning, and later in the Legacy Of The Force series when he grieves the loss. Mara would not be replaceable and certainly not someone he would disrespect the memory of or the sanctity of marriage by chasing another. Likewise, Luke doesn’t drink. Luke loves, he cares, he tries and he is incredibly busy always trying to solve problems.

He doesn’t go on vacation but he delegates responsibility. He trains and researches when things go wrong. He looks for solutions but he doesn’t do normal things like sit at home watching sports or just being normal for a change. The only glimpses at him being normal are when he’s joking with his family or sat making a mistake.

Basically, it is tough to stay in the Canon role.

I would like to point out that I have a great love and respect for our TwitterVerse Community, and that I do not wish to lose any of you from the interaction.

I don’t want to see @DarthSarah and @Luke__Skywalker unable to talk because one is a Sith and the other a Jedi. I don’t want to have to stop talking to @LizTheBlonde and @DarthTraya because they are either 4000 years before my time or a baker living elsewhere. I know I can talk to them on my private account, but that isn’t what makes the interactions so fun and silly. I don’t want to lose any of those interactions and I think Luke doesn’t either. Just that as @AdmiralDaala puts it “Don’t choose Palpatine if you want to be in the Rebel Alliance”.

So the verdict on Canon? I think they make great cameras but pose too much of a limit on a TwitterVerse. Having said that, staying in character is something I’d encourage, with enough imagination to believe that Luke could have a laugh and a splash by the pool, Mara might secretly dislike her nephew Jacen and prefer the cakes made by a Lady of the Sith, and Cade Skywalker is still a whore.

—-STORY—-

Last night, we tried to split two storylines off. @Biddygirl and @TheCaptainRex wanted to involve a newcomer to the Twitterverse who had been on the sidelines for a while. In their world, Biddy and Rex live together at 500 Republica, which is Liz’ home in Coruscant. Due to some problems regarding @Every1HatesAni being a Jedi and @TheCountDooku wanting him dead, @TheCadBane attempted to kidnap @Biddygirl and lots happened. Ani and Rex foiled Bane, who fled but damage had been done and Biddy miscarried Rex and her child. On a far away planet known as Dagobah, @CadeSkywalker and his new apprentice @DraconicDreams have crash landed into the swamps and searched out @AllSeeingYoda to help train Kitty (Draco) in the ways of the Force.

Basically there’s some trial and error, both Kitty and Cade feel the miscarriage, the sadness, the anger and the concern through their force bonds with corresponding friends (Cade+Biddy, Kitty+Rex) and that’s where we left off.
